7 Tips To Make Moving Less Awful
There is so much excitement around moving into a new home until it comes time to pack up and actually move! While the idea of moving is great, the work it involves can often be overwhelming. Moving requires hard work but t it is possible to cut down on the aggravation and anxiety by taking steps to streamline the process. Here are 10 tips to make moving a little easier.
1 - Take Photos Before You Start
Unpacking will be much easier if you know how things go back together. Dissembled furniture, cord systems, and everything in-between will go back together smoothly if you have a photo reference for how you had it before! By taking some pre-packing photos, you'll know exactly where everything goes when it's time to unpack.
2 - Organize Cords with Toilet Paper Rolls
Tossing cords into a box is easy, but untangling them after is not. An easy way to cut down on the jumbled mess is to wind each cord up in a 6-inch coil, and insert each into its own toilet paper roll. Now, no tangled mess to unpack later. Make sure you label this box and pack it last so it is the first thing you pull out!
3 - Making a Moving Toolbox
Precious moving time can be wasted if you are spending as much time looking for the packing tape as you do filling boxes. Make the process more efficient with a “moving toolbox" where you can keep your box cutter, tape, labeling markers, and other packing supplies in one area that you can take from room to room. It's easy to misplace small and essential items like these and you don’t want them to end up in a packed box!
4 - Tape Cords To The Items They Belong To
You could already be at your new local park but instead, you’ve spent the last hour trying to figure out which power cord goes to each electronic device in your home. Skip the stress by taping the plug right to the appliance it belongs to!
5 - Use Items You Have To Pack Breakables Safely
Instead of tossing your towels and blankets into box after box, use them to wrap those breakables! Pot holders, oven mitts, and even those old paper and plastic grocery bags you were planning to recycle make great packing materials.
6 - Keep Clothes in Drawers
Another way to cut down on boxes? Don't pack the clothes in your drawers - they're already in a box! Wrap the whole drawer in plastic wrap - and do the same for hanging shoe racks, utensil organizers, and other container-type items.
7 - Protect Liquids With Plastic Wrap
Don’t spend all your time packing just to have that cleaning supplies box spill during the move, destroying the box, soaking clothes in the neighboring one, and causing a huge mess in the middle of an already stressful day. Prevent spills by uncapping all household liquid and covering the top with clear plastic wrap, and then tightly resealing the cap.
